I'm looking for some guidance on setting up an HSA for the first time effective 1/1/14. We are on 9.0.1 and it seems like I can either choose to do a RS benefit plan or a deduction for the employee (and another deduction if the employer contributes). Is there any guidance or documentation any has on set-up, best practices, and/or lessons learned? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

We are currently looking to set up the same thing. Does anyone have experience with this?

I am not exactly sure if I will end up answering either of your questions...but here is our set up.

We have HL Benefit Plan for the HSA plan. And the employee/company deduction tied to that for the cost of the premium.

And then we have an RS Benefit plan for the HSA that is where we track the employee's contribution to their HSA account.

It appears to work for us. But I was not involved in the original set up and I have never seen another set up to know if there is a different way to do it.

We are also setting up an HSA for 2014. We are using an HL plan and an RS plan, however there is no way to link these 2 plans together. We aren't going to allow employees to enroll in the RS part of the plan through ESS because we'll end up with employees making an election that didn't select the high-deductible health plan. It would be great if there was a specific HSA option that would create dependencies for  these 2 plans.

What about preventing non HDHP enrollees from enrolling in the HSA Plan. Is there no functionality to prevent this? I have begun to audit the elections and due to the fact the HSA Plan is open to all, employees are enrolling in it when they should not be. Any guidance out there to help?

We use waive plans to help us with this. We created two waive plans. One that says 'I opt not to contribute to HSA' and one that says 'Did NOT elect HSA Health Plan'
