Our current DC plan is a match percent schedule and we allow both percentage and flat amount employee contributions. We will be instituting a default contribution for anyone who doesn't specifically elect a contribution, or for those who don't specifically waive enrollment into the plan. The default will be a 3% contribution.
Since the match percent schedule contribution type doesn't have a default enrollment option, I'm trying to figure out the best way to move forward. The only 2 options I see is to create another plan, as a default plan, which can automatically enroll participants at 3%. However, I think if the employee changes their election (to a different percent, or a flat amount), they would then have to be moved from this plan to the plan that we are using currently. That would be a tremendous amount of manual work, with the distinct possiblitiy the employees would be enrolled in multiple plans. If we don't use this option, the only other choice I see is to change our current plan from a match percent schedule to a custom calculation which would have the 3% built in.
Am I not seeing the forest through the trees? If anyone else has a default enrollment, would you be willing to share your set up?
Thanks bunches!! Stephanie
